Rotary seeking hosts for visiting student

The Rotary Club of Andover is seeking up to three host families for its 2014-2015 visiting Danish student.

The visiting 17-year-old will arrive in Andover in mid-August, just in time to settle in before beginning the school year at Andover High. A family initially is being sought to host him for his first three months in town and introduce him to life in Andover. Additional families are then needed to provide housing to round out his nine-month stay.

Although he has already completed high school in Denmark, the visiting teen who is fluent in English will enjoy a senior year at Andover High before returning home to attend university, Rotary leaders say. While he enjoys physics and chemistry classes, his favorite subject is history and he intends to pursue a major in a related field, they say.

In addition to his academic pursuits, he is active in Scouting and is an apprentice Scout leader. He loves to cook and will likely treat his hosts to Danish cuisine that he prepares. He is outgoing, motivated, above-average in his class, and has a positive can-do attitude, according to Rotary.

More than 5,000 high school students participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange program every year and the Andover Rotary Club has joined clubs all across the globe in hosting one of the teens in recent years. Rotary policy restricts the identification of exchange students and their host families for safety and security reasons.

Past Andover host families say they have had positive experiences through the program. One family who hosted a French student in 2011-2012 says getting to know her made the rest of the world seem more accessible, while another family who welcomed a Japanese student in 2012-2013 says hosting was a life-changing experience. Rotary leaders say this year’s exchange student from Brazil will be returning home with new friendships and memories and the families who hosted him feel equally rewarded.
