Spring sunrise: Shawsheen River group to celebrate equinox

The Shawsheen River Watershed Association will sponsor its third annual Vernal Equinox Celebration with live music, a campfire, and a short program it stays will focus on the astronomy, history and cultural customs surrounding the first day of spring. The program is set for Sunday, March 24 from 6:45 to 7:30 a.m. at Serio’s Grove, 45 Lowell Junction Road in Andover.

There are several options for those who wish to participate in the celebration to mark the arrival of spring.

1. You can come Saturday evening, March 23 for a campout at Serio’s Grove, 45 Lowell Junction Road. For more info about camping out contact rhdecelle@hotmail.com.

2. You can join a Sunday morning, predawn canoe/kayak trip. Bring your boat at 6 a.m. to the boat access across from Pfizer Corp. at 101 Lowell Junction Road. The group will paddle to Serio’s Grove and join the campers for the celebration, then paddle down to the Ballardvale Mill Pond. For more info about paddling contact bob_otter@comcast.net.

3. You can join a Sunday morning hike. Drive to Serio’s Grove, park in the field, and walk a short distance to the Pavilion by 6:45 a.m. Sunrise will be about 7:18 a.m.

SRWA events are free and open to the general public.
