Former Vt. Gov. Dean headed to Phillips

---- — Former Vermont governor and one-time U.S. presidential candidate Howard Dean visits Phillips Academy Thursday, May 16, for a talk at 7 p.m. in Kemper Auditorium inside the Elson Art Center at 5 Chapel Ave.

This event is free and open to the public.

From 1982 to 1986, Dean served in the Vermont House of Representatives, where he was elected assistant minority leader in 1985. He was elected lieutenant governor in 1986, and re-elected in 1988 and 1990. While treating a patient on August 14, 1991, Dean received an emergency call informing him that Gov. Richard Snelling had died of a heart attack. He was sworn in to replace Snelling, After completing his patient’s physical, he headed to Montpelier with his family, where he took the oath of office, was elected to a full term in 1992 and subsequently re-elected to five consecutive two-year terms.

In 2004, Dean, a native New Yorker, ran for the Democratic presidential nomination as an early frontrunner. After an unsuccessful bid, he went on to serve as chairman of the Democratic National Committee until 2010.
