---- — Gas smells on Federal Street unfounded

A mysterious gas smell sent fire and utility crews to several locations along Federal Street Tuesday, but the multiple reports came up clear.

Callers at 300 Federal St. initially reported a gas smell just after 2 p.m., leading them to evacuate the building, according to scanner reports. Moments later, another report of a gas smell came in from 400 Federal St., located across the parking lot, followed by a third report from 600 Federal St., about a half-mile down the road.

Columbia Gas was called to the scene to investigate. Fire and gas crews did meter readings at all locations, but picked up no evidence of gas leaks anywhere, according to Andover Fire Deputy Kevin Connors. Crews were also sent to 800 Federal St., a construction site that will soon be the new home of Schneider Electric. All crews cleared the scene after about an hour.

“It was the same report throughout,” Connors said. “People smelled it, and it dissipated.”
