Moment of silence to precede ABC 5K

The Andover Townsman

---- — ANDOVER — A Better Chance will honor all who have been touched by the horrific events surrounding last week’s Boston Marathon bombings with a moment of silence before the start of Sunday’s 3rd annual 5K Fun-Run & Walk.

Before runners and walkers step off on the course, there will be a moment of silence at 9:45 a.m. at the ABC House at 134 Main St. Organizers invite even those who aren’t participating in the race to join them in pausing in a moment of reflection in tribute to the victims, their families and the running community as well as in celebration of the resilient and generous spirit that Boston has shown the world.

Organizers say the first ABC 5K came on the heels of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011 and was dedicated as Hope for Japan in honor of the victims. Once again, they say the race follows a tragic and transformative event, this time closer to home.

The race will follow the moment of silence, going off at 10 a.m. beginning at the ABC House.

In keeping with its tradition of helping others in need, A Better Chance will donate a portion of the proceeds from the race to One Fund to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Race organizers are encouraging participants to wear yellow and blue ribbons, which also will be available before the race.

Since 1967, Andover A Better Chance has been giving talented youth of color the opportunity to achieve their dreams through education.
