He's only 5, but Nolan Howard will host his third annual Alex's Lemonade Stand as part of the National Lemonade Days weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3 Cuba St. The stand is one of thousands across the country that raise money for research of childhood cancers.
The Howard family decided to get involved with the foundation after a friend's 7-month-old son, Cian Crowley of Quincy, Mass, lost his battle with neuroblastoma, the same cancer that took the life of Alexandra "Alex" Scott. To date, Nolan's efforts have resulted in nearly $6,000 being raised to fight devastating childhood cancer, in the name and memory of baby Cian.
Lemonade Days is a three-day national event that grew out of Alex Scott's front yard lemonade stand and is held every year over the same June weekend. During Lemonade Days, dedicated volunteers across the country set up stands, raising over $1 million for childhood cancer research in one weekend. June 2009 will mark the Sixth Annual Lemonade Days with an estimated 10,000 volunteers at over 2,000 Alex's Lemonade Stands around the nation.
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised nearly $20 million towards fulfilling Alex's dream of finding a cure for all childhood cancer, funding over 80 research projects nationally, according to the Howard family.
