All Those Years Ago

100 Years Ago May 2, 1913

An auction of household furniture will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Hillholm, the former residence of Mrs. Charles L. Carter. The sale will commence at 1:30 p.m. and a barge for ladies only will leave the corner of Main and Chestnut streets at 1:15 for the accommodation of those who wish to attend.

John Crook, who has been employed by J.P. Wyllie & Co., has opened a temporary shoe repair shop in the Michelini building on Main Street. He will eventually move into the shoe shop next to Daly’s block, which is being vacated. Crook is a first-class shoe-maker and guarantees the best of work.

75 Years Ago April 29, 1938

The Andover Townsman, published for the past 50 1/2 years by the Andover Press, Ltd., was sold this week to Elmer J. Grover, who for the past six years has been serving as the paper’s managing editor. Today’s Townsman is the last to be published by the firm that launched the paper on Oct. 14, 1887, and has offered a weekly issue ever since.

The 1938 “Miss Andover” is to be selected tonight at a dance presented by the local Legion post at the Crystal Ballroom. A style show is to be held in conjunction with the dance.

One of the less well-known institutions of Andover is the house on Punchard Avenue where six elderly ladies are living out their lives in comfort and security. The Andover Home for the Aged was founded 26 years ago. Since then, a considerable number of ladies have enjoyed its peace and friendliness in their declining years.

50 Years Ago May 2, 1963

Many lucky prize-winners were named at the Andover Co-Op Townsman cooking party held April 24 at the Central School auditorium. Anderson, 3 Wolcott Ave.; Reinhold’s, won by Mrs. Arthur Doucestte, 39 High St.; W.R. Hill won by Miss Virginia Abbott, 111 Main St.; The Yankee Lady, won by Grace McKeon, 10 Ridge St.; Mary Ann’s won by Mrs. Henry Boulanger, 3 Summer St.; Michael Jay’s, won by Mrs. Madeleine Simeone, 13 Stratford Road; Elander & Swanton, won by Theresa Burbine, 22 Brechin Terrace; F.A. Hiscox & Co., won by Mrs. Carolyn Abbott, 111 Main St.; and Andover Gift House, won by Rita Armstrong, 173 North Main St.
