Two families whose home was destroyed by fire are living temporarily with relatives this mid-week. Their Cuba Street apartments were ruined by flames, smoke and water late Tuesday morning. Relatives and the Andover Chapter, American Red Cross, combined to aid the families.

A minor earthquake — recorded as having originated in the Cape Cod area — rumbled in Andover late Wednesday morning. Houses shook slightly, but there was no recorded evidence of damage from the tremor.

25 Years AgoOct. 20, 1988

The School Committee announced the salaries of the two assistant superintendents, Lois Haslam and Francis Paul, at their meeting Tuesday night. Both Haslam and Paul will receive an annual salary of $62,000, which is about a 3 percent increase over the last year, committee member Margo Tilghman said. “It puts them on a comparable level with those holding similar positions in surrounding areas,” she said.

The League of Women Voters of Andover will sponsor a debate between state Sen. Patricia McGovern and challenger William E. Melahn of Andover tonight at 7 in the Andover High School cafeteria.
