Final days to seek Andover Garden Club scholarship
The Andover Garden Club has announced that it is seeking qualified students to apply for the Ruth I. Cleveland Scholarship Fund, a scholarship that memorializes the late Ruth Cleveland, a long-term resident of Andover who served as president of the Andover Garden Club from 1954 to 1956.
The memorial scholarship is given annually in recognition of Cleveland’s efforts to enrich the lives of garden-club members in the pursuit of all the arts and sciences. Last year the scholarship was awarded to Nicholas Valentini, who graduated from Georgetown High School June 2009.
The Ruth I. Cleveland Scholarship Fund was initially funded by her two children, Ann C. Lange, an internationally known floral arranger, artist, and lifelong resident of Andover who herself served as president of the Andover Garden Club from 1985-1987, and the late Byron R. Cleveland, Jr. The fund grows yearly through donations from the Lange family and the Andover Garden Club. Applicants for the scholarship must be graduate or undergraduate students pursuing the study of the arts and/or sciences.
“Though Mother was a skilled and dedicated gardener and flower arranger, the scholarship is not limited just to horticulture, floriculture, or landscape design,” said Ann Lange. “She taught English and French in the Lawrence school system for many years, and the scholarship’s scope is intended to accurately reflect her broader interests.”
Ten Other Scholarships Available
The Ruth I. Cleveland Scholarship Fund is one of 11 scholarships administered by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Inc., the parent organization of the Andover Garden Club. The 10 additional scholarships are available for students majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, agronomy, city planning, environmental studies, land management, botany, biology, and allied subjects. The Federation offers scholarships in amounts up to $1,000.
Applicants must be high-school seniors, college students, or graduate students who reside in Massachusetts; have a minimum B average, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, exhibit good character, and demonstrate financial need. Students must be attending or entering accredited colleges or universities. Only one application per student is needed for consideration for all 11 scholarships.
March 1, is the deadline for submitting applications for the 2009-10 school year. Application and financial-aid forms may be viewed and downloaded at http://gardencentral.org/gcfm/scholarships/.
