oung singers had a chance to dip their feet into the world of opera during a special program at Christ Church last weekend.

Interested youth joined the Young Opera Company of New England and members of the Christ Church Andover Youth Music Program in preparing portions of a vaudeville opera called Brundibar (The Bumblebee) by Hans Krasá.

The “opera encounter” was held Saturday, Sept. 1 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday Sept. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. with a short performance given at 4:30.

The Sunday performance was a concert of highlights learned in two short days for family, friends and opera enthusiasts, held in the newly renovated sanctuary of Christ Church. A short demonstration of the church’s new Fisk organ also was held in the balcony after the concert.

During the weekend, kids learned about opera singing, acting and movement as well as music reading and understanding of the musical score, according to event director Marie Stultz, who is also the founder of the Young Opera Company.

Brundibar (The Bumblebee) is a Czech story about a brother and sister who want to find milk for their mother.

The evil organ grinder or Brundibar wants to steal all the money the children have collected from people shopping in the marketplace of the town.

A bird, cat, and dog run to the children’s assistance and eventually ward off the evil “Bumblebee.” A fight ensues where eventually good wins over evil.
