Rose H. Big, 94

Rose Big, 94, formerly of New Windsor, New York died on January 16th at her home in Andover.

Rose, one of 11 children, was the daughter of Steven Lakatos and Rose Zekany, who emigrated from Hungary in the early 1900’s. She grew up near Wharton, New Jersey and attended area schools. A deeply religious and spiritual person her entire life, she loved church and as a young girl would walk 4 miles to mass before walking back to attend services and Sunday school at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church. In Andover she attended South Church and participated in a women’s Bible study group for many years.

Rose lived her faith by helping others, and moved to Andover to be close to her then 9 year old granddaughter, Alicia, supporting her in every sport and school event. When mobility and age limited Rose’s ability to leave home, she knit sweaters for children around the world for Guideposts missions.

Rose also loved sports: Nascar races, golf, and football but baseball was her favorite, switching her loyalty from the Mets to the Red Sox when she moved to Massachusetts. However, she often turned off the game when she deemed the Sox were playing poorly and losing.

Her family was among her greatest joys. Widow of Joseph Big, her husband for 58 years, they had two children. Rose is survived by son Joseph of New Windsor, New York, daughter Susan Big of Andover, granddaughter Alicia Bursey and her father Paul, granddaughter Lisa Hess, her husband Robert, and two great grandsons Daniel and Robbie Hess of Salisbury Mills, NY, brother John Lakatos of Rockaway, New Jersey as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express its thanks to Merrimack Valley Hospice, Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, and to Joslin Clinic for the education and compassionate care they provided through the years.

A memorial celebration will be held in Andover at a future date. A memorial service will be held in New Windsor, NY at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 19th . Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory can be made to South Church, 41 Central Street, Andover, MA 01810. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Conte Funeral Home, Andover.
