Louis Ronsivalli, 91

Haverhill, MA — LOUIS J. RONSIVALLI (Sr.), born March 6, 1922, passed away peacefully on December 31. He was the son of Vincenzo and Grazia Ronsisvalle, who immigrated to Lawrence as young adults from their native Sicily.

Mr. Ronsivalli grew up and lived most of his life in Lawrence, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1940. In his younger years he worked as a milk delivery man and cabinet-maker in the City. He raised his family on Prospect Hill in Lawrence – in a home he proudly built for $3,000 using a “how to” book, and great perseverance – before moving to Methuen in 1990. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a Master’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Lowell Institute and a Master’s of Science in Food Science from MIT. He was a WWII veteran having served in the US Army in the Aleutian Islands through 1943. After spending several years working for the Food Science Department of MIT, he served as Laboratory Director for the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, under the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Gloucester, MA. He achieved many accomplishments in the area of bacteriology and food preservation in the fishing industry, such that his laboratory gained worldwide fame and recognition. He had published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in a variety of scientific journals.

In later years, he was a strong advocate for preserving purity in drinking water and argued against fluoridation of drinking water systems around the country. After his retirement in 1982, he wrote over a dozen books on various subjects, all of which are available today.

Mr. Ronsivalli was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Elvira (Perillo); his brothers, Santo and Nicholas. He is survived by his daughter, Alice; son-in-law, Kevin Miller of Haverhill; his son, Louis (Jr.); daughter-in-law, Joanne Ronsivalli of Salem, NH; granddaughter, Sarah Rainey and her husband, Michael Rainey; and great-grandson, Tyler Rainey of Winchester, MA; and granddaughter, Abby Ronsivalli of Salem, NH. He is also survived by two sisters, Antoinette Ronsivalli of Haverhill, and Mary Furnari of Andover, and several nieces and nephews.
