ANDOVER — Paul Miner Steinbrink, 98, resident of Ashland Farm in North Andover, passed away Tuesday, January 10, at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence.
He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 19, 1913, son of the late Raymond F. and Lora M. (Brown) Steinbrink. He grew up in Richmond, Indiana, graduating from Earlham College in that town in 1935. While at Earlham he was on the football, horseshoes, and track squads. After college, he worked at the First National Bank in Richmond and did postgraduate work at the University of Chicago and the Harvard School of Business.
He joined Swift & Company in 1937 at the Chicago plant accounting department, subsequently holding positions in the insurance department handling investments of employees' pension trusts. In 1941 he was assigned to assist in handling marine and war risk insurance. When the latter became an almost complete government responsibility in 1942 he was appointed secretary to Swift's investment committee, heading the investment division of the Treasurer's Office.
In 1956 he was elected assistant treasurer of the company with jurisdiction over the company's investment reserves. He also held this position in Swift's subsidiaries, including Swift Canadian Company, Security Mutual Casualty Company, Globe Life Insurance Company and Scarborough & Company. He was elected Treasurer in 1965. He retired from Swift in 1978 in the position of Financial Vice President and Director of the Esmark Corporation.
He served on numerous boards in the Chicago area. In addition to service on the Board of Trustees of Earlham College, he served as Trustee of Morgan Park Academy in Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, was a member of the Board of Managers and Secretary of the Methodist Old Peoples Home, trustee of member churches and a member of the Executives' Club of Chicago.
He was the husband of the late Annabel Kathryn (Benham) Steinbrink, who died in 2003, and father of the late David Allen Steinbrink of Western Springs, Illinois. He is survived by his daughter, former Andover Selectman Gail L. Ralston of Andover, and her husband, Robert H. Decelle, Jr., and a sister, Dorothy (Steinbrink) Mikesell of New Paris, Ohio. Grandchildren include Leigh Ann (Steinbrink) Yuen and her husband, Richard Yuen, of Oak Bluffs; Kathryn Marie (Steinbrink) Leatherwood, and her husband, Tom, of Channahon, Illinois; Erik D. Ralston of Los Angeles, California; Kevin C. Ralston, of Andover; and Heather A. Howard and her husband, Joshua Tate Howard, also of Andover. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends will gather at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover, for visitation on Saturday, January 14, from 1-4 p.m. A service will be held at 4:30 at the funeral home following visitation. Interment will take place in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Critical Care Unit of Lawrence General Hospital, 1 General Street, Lawrence, MA 01842.
