North Andover, MA — Elizabeth May (Carter) Gorrie, died peacefully on the morning of April 12, 2013, at the Meadows Nursing Care Facility, Edgewood Retirement Community, North Andover, Mass. Betty was born in Andover on April 11, 1920. She was a lifelong resident of Andover until moving to the Edgewood Senior Retirement Community in July 1997. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Phoebe Carter; her sister Janet Broadbent, her brother Thomas Carter and her husband, John E.A. Gorrie, Sr.
Betty leaves her son Retired Army Major John E. A. Gorrie, Jr. and his wife, Jo-Ann, of Gambrills, Md.; two grandsons; Army Major Aaron S. Gorrie and his wife, Jennifer Ray, of Odenton, Md., David T. Gorrie and his wife, Jennifer Bishop, of Clarksburg, Md.; and three great grandchildren, Jackson, Adalyn Rose and Henry.
Betty graduated from Punchard High School, Andover, Chamberline School of Retailing in Boston and received an associate degree from Northeastern University. Before working for Melrose Wakefield Hospital Social Services, Betty was an assistant clothing buyer at Cherry & Webb Company. Betty’s interests were vast, particularly as an active member at West Parish Church and the Andover Historical Society.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial will be held at a later date at the West Parish Church, Andover, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Parish Church, or to the charity of one’s choice.
