Elliott R. Anderson, 86
GROVELAND — Elliott “Andy” R. Anderson, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 at his home in Groveland.
Born in Swampscott to the late William H. and Beatrice (Burton) Anderson, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for the Eastman Gelatin Co. for many years as an engineer until he retired in 1983.
Andy was a 1st Lt. of the Civil Air Patrol, was a commercial pilot, a gunsmith and a member of the Cape Ann Radio Controlled Club.
He was an avid outdoorsman, especially fond of hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two sons, Donald F. Anderson of Florida, William H. Anderson of Beverly; four daughters, Nancy C. Anderson of Florida, Judith L. Merritt of Middleton, Lori J. Lavender of North Carolina, Mary G. Peckham of Salisbury; a brother, William H. Anderson of Wakefield, N.H.; three sisters, Gladys Runlette of Topsfield, Ruth LeBrun of Georgetown, Eleanor Waring of Groveland; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Elliott Russell Anderson.

Ruth R. Zalanskas, 78
ANDOVER — Ruth R. Zalanskas, a longtime Andover resident, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007.
Ruth was born Feb. 21, 1929 in Lawrence, daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (Balcius) Zalanskas. She was a graduate of Lawrence High School and McIntosh Business College.
She was employed at the former Radio Station, WLAW, Jenrose Shoe Company, and Cardinal Shoe Company where she served as Personnel Manager and Private Secretary for over 30 years. Ruth retired from Cardinal Shoe in 1999.
She enjoyed travelling, especially to Hawaii. She was also a voracious reader. Her favorite books were mysteries, and she could read a book in two sittings.
Ruth leaves a niece, Geraldine Hallgren of Old Saybrook, Conn.; grandnephews, Andrew Hallgren of Niantic, Conn., Brian Hallgren and his wife, Megan of Canton, Mich. She was predeceased by her sister, Ann, also of Andover, for whom she was a loving caretaker for seven years. She was also predeceased by her brother, John, who lived in Weston.
ARRANGEMENTS: There were no calling hours and the burial was private as per her wishes. Roy M. Simpson, 65
HAVERHILL — Roy M. Simpson, 65, of Haverhill, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his family.
He was born in Dundee, Scotland, July 9, 1942, son of the late Thomas and Catherine (McKelvie) Simpson, and was educated in Scotland.
While in Scotland he served a five year apprenticeship and became a marine engineer, and later was employed in the British Merchant Navy.
In 1968 he came to the United States and had lived in Andover, Lawrence and Amesbury, prior to moving to Rocks Village in 1999.
Prior to his illness Roy had been employed by J.H. Horne and Sons , which later became Horne Machine in Lawrence.
He was a devoted hard working husband and father and was a football fanatic that enjoyed both American and European football games.
His survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sheena M. (Brown) Simpson of Haverhill; a daughter, Sheena C. Simpson and her husband Andrea Puddu of Haverhill; a twin brother, Thomas and his wife Isobel Simpson of Scotland; two grandchildren, Alessandro and Massimo Puddu of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews.

Anita S. Breton, 89
METHUEN — Anita S. (Ouellette) Breton, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, surrounded by her loving family at the Nevins Nursing Centre.
Born in Lawrence, Anita was the daughter of the late Vital and Aurore Ouellette. She was a graduate of Saint Ann’s Grammar school.
Mrs. Breton had been employed at the Pacific Mills and also most recently with I.T.T. in charge of their quality control department prior to her retirement.
A member of the Rainbow Club at our Lady of Good Counsel Parish/St. Theresa Church, Anita enjoyed bowling, dancing, traveling and quite famous for her apple and banana cream pies.
The widow of Louis G. Breton, she is survived by son Daniel L. and wife Cheryl of Salem, N.H., daughter Denise and husband John Lavoie of Andover; three sisters, Irene Griffin of Florida, Lucille DiZoglio of Lawrence, Lorraine Cooper of Florida, Robert of Methuen, Leo of Florida and Ronald, also of Methuen, five grandchildren, Krista and husband Tom Galligani, Neal Breton, Stacey and husband Jim Stadler, Angela Lourette and Nathaniel Breton, five great-grandchildren, Thomas and Louis Galligani, Logan, Madison and Lexington Lourette, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Breton was predeceased by brothers, Armand, Rene, Albert Ouellette, and her sister Cecile Marchand.

Ralph Wolfendale Jr., 66
HAVERHILL — Ralph Wolfendale Jr., 66, of Haverhill, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 at his home in Haverhill.
He was born on Friday, March 7, 1941, in Lawrence to Ralph J. and Helen (Ferris) Wolfendale Sr. Ralph attended Lawrence schools, graduated Lawrence High School Class of 1959. He continued his education at Purdue University and Western State College in Colorado. Ralph Wolfendale Jr., was one of the most decorated high school quarterbacks in area history. He was named to the Sporting News and Scholastic Coach High School All-American teams after throwing 15 TD passes as a senior in 1958 when Lawrence won its second Eastern MA Class A titles.
He worked for Raytheon Corporation in Andover in the security department for 30 years.
Mr. Wolfendale is survived by his son Ralph J. Wolfendale III and his wife Heidi of Haverhill; sisters, Ellen and her husband Raymond Gilbert of Lawrence and Marilyn Hale of Lawrence; grandchildren, Molly and Michael Wolfendale of Haverhill; two nephews, Matthew and Sean Hale of Lawrence and one niece, Catherine Hale of Lawrence.

Wayne J. St. Louis, 53
METHUEN — Wayne J. St. Louis, 53, of Methuen died on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 at his home.
Wayne was born in Methuen and was raised and educated in Lawrence. He had lived in Lawrence most of his life. He had worked at Malden Mills, Lawrence.
Wayne was an avid sports fan. He loved the Boston Red Sox and loved to golf.
His family members include his daughter, Jasmine C. St. Louis of Hooksett, N.H. and his son, Chad. He leaves his father, David St. Louis of Andover; two sisters, Sandra and her husband Raymond Fox of Methuen and Beverly and her husband James St. Hilaire of Derry, N.H.; and a brother, Dennis and his wife Christine St. Louis of Pinehurst, N.C. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, including his niece Heather St. Louis, and aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the son of the late Lorraine St. Louis.

Paul J. Sutton
NORTH ANDOVER — Paul J. Sutton, Ret. Lawrence Police officer, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 at the Lawrence General Hospital.
Born in Andover, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Salmon) Sutton.
Officer Sutton was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, and received an associate’s degree in criminal justice.
For 40 years he was a police officer with the Lawrence Police Department and a member of the Massachusetts Policemen’s Association.
Paul served his country in the United States Army before receiving an honorable discharge and awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Sutton was a member of the Lawrence Lodge of Elks # 65 B.P.O.E.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years Jeanette “Jay” Sutton and three children, Kelly K. and husband David Doyle of Methuen, Kenneth J. and wife Lori Giaquinta of North Andover, and Gerald and wife Amy Giaquinta of Napa Valley, Calif.; grandsons, Jeremy, Kyle, Ryan, Jason Giaquinta and Scott Doyle.

Shueh-Shu Wen Hsia, 90
PEABODY — Shueh-Shu Wen Hsia (Shaw), also known as “Shu Shaw”, 90, of Peabody and formerly of Danvers, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 25, 2007 at the Lahey Clinic in Peabody following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of Tao-Ching Hsia (Shaw) with whom she shared over 64 years of marriage.
She was born in Sichuan, China and lived there in Nanking, Shanghai, and Hong Konge for most of her adult life. She later lived in New York, and more recently lived in Danvers and Peabody. While living in China, she was one of the first female judges; she worked as a Judge in China’s Civil Court System.
She is survived by her husband, Tao-Ching Hsia (Shaw); a son, James Hsia of Weston; and a daughter, Julia Hsia of Andover; four grandchildren, Diana Vining, and Max, Vanessa, and Katie Shaw; a brother, Shu-Ling Wen of China; two sisters, Shu-Fang Wen and Shu-Chiang Wen, all of China.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service was held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Brooksby Village Chapel, 300 Brooksby Village Drive in Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Alden C. Johnson, 93
GROVELAND — Alden Charles Johnson, 93, of Groveland, passed away Thursday evening, Oct. 25, 2007 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.
He was born in Lawrence on April 2, 1914, son of the late Charles and Anita (Fontaine) Johnson.
He was educated in the Lawrence schools and was a Navy veteran of World War II receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with four stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, American Area Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Johnson was the superintendent of the Westwood Cemetery in Andover, Immaculate Conception Polish Cemetery in Methuen for 40 years, was the proprietor of Ward 6 Social and Political Club in So. Lawrence and retired from the former Western Electric in 1975.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Lawrence and was the treasurer at the church for over 40 years.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and dog and horse racing.
He was the husband of the late Jenny (Duda) Johnson who died in 1980, and is survived by his daughter, retired Haverhill public school teacher Carolyn K. Johnson; his adopted daughter, Dorothy K. Kardas PSY.D.TH.D., both of Groveland; as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Marcelle A. Watson, 91
BIDDEFORD, Maine — Marcelle A. Watson, 91, formerly of Biddeford, Maine, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 at the Springbrook Center for Health in Westbrook.
She was born in Lawrence on June 26, 1916, a daughter of Octave and Eugenie (Huard) Ouellet and was educated at Lawrence schools.
In September of 1944, she married James H. Watson of Andover.
Mrs. Watson enjoyed traveling to many worldwide destinations, including spending a year in the Philippines.
She also liked to read and solve word puzzles as well as knitting. In addition, during her time in Fairfield, Calif., she was a dedicated volunteer for local Fairfield organizations.
Mrs. Watson is predeceased by her husband, James H. Watson in 1960; her daughter, Ellen Sack in 2003; three sisters; and two brothers. Surviving her are her son, Howard (Sam) Watson and his wife Nancy of Biddeford; two half-brothers, Richard Ouellet, Gerald Ouellet; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
