John J. Provasoli Sr., 93
ANDOVER | John J. Provasoli Sr., 93, of Andover, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007 at his home after a brave battle with cancer.
He was born on May 24, 1914 in Milford, N.H., son of the late Agostino and Ambrogina (Puricelli) Provasoli.
He worked for Essex Bituminous of Peabody and Andover for over 40 years and was a 51 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4.
During World War II, he served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard.
John was a very active member of St. Augustine Parish in Andover and was a hospitality minister for over 40 years at St. Joseph's Church in Ballardvale.
In 1999 John and his wife Elizabeth became affiliated members in the Order of St. Augustine.
He was active in the American Legion Post #8 for many years and was recognized for his contributions as a member of the Honor Guard. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Andover 1078 Knights of Columbus.
After his retirement, John enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. John will always be remembered as a kind and generous man who would take great pleasure in helping a neighbor and especially sharing vegetables from his bountiful garden.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Betty" H. (Noon) Provasoli; two sons, John J. Provasoli Jr. and his wife Janet of Salem, N.H. and Joseph R. Provasoli and Betty Dayyo of Phoenix; two daughters, Debra P. and husband Todd D. Merrill of Andover and Cheryl A. Provasoli of Bradford; two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Provasoli and fiancee Daniel DiBella of Salem, N.H. and Emily N. Traynor of Bradford; a brother, Charles M. Provasoli of Deland, Fla.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends were invited to a funeral Mass on Monday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Highvale Lane, Andover. Calling hours were Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main St., Andover. Burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. James Alton Rushing, 78
ANDOVER | James Alton Rushing, 78, of Andover, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 at Academy Manor.
He was born on Feb. 24, 1929 in Magnolia, Miss. As a teenager during World War II, James would at every opportunity meet with servicemen, who were his idols, as they traveled through Magnolia on the various troop trains and troop convoys. James would take his small shoe-shine box, and without asking for pay would get down on his knees and shine the boots of the men making them ready for inspection.
After finishing high school, he enlisted and was in the First Calvary Division where he served for the next 20 years, the majority of the time in the South Pacific, including a term in Korea. For his service, he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. James was stationed in Japan when he met and married Teruko Suda circa 1956.
He left the military while stationed in Hawaii and attended the University of Hawaii on the GI Bill, receiving a B.A. in Japanese in 1972. He spent many years as a translator, translating technical journals from Japanese into English.
After his daughter, Lynda, finished medical school and began a family in Massachusetts, James and Teruko followed them here to care for their grandchildren. While he spent most of his time shuttling his grandchildren to school and various activities, he also loved to play his guitar and to compose poetry on the topic of his life and events in Mississippi.
He had a lifelong love of learning and had a particular fondness for books on physics and evolution as well as Japanese and American literature. After becoming proficient in Japanese, he also tackled Latin and Greek in his spare time.
James was preceded in death by his father, mother and infant brother, Hershel Glynn. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Teruko, and daughter Dr. Lynda Rushing, a pathologist in Boston and her husband Dr. Josef Gendlerman, an Andover internist and granddaughters Kira and Emma of Andover, daughter Maya Walker and her husband Phillip Walker, and granddaughters, Sophia and twins Grace and Allegra, and grandson Isaac of Dunbarton, N.H., sisters, Helen Jones, Houston, Evelyn Bridges, Kentwood, La., brothers, Arlen Rushing, Jefferson, Texas, David Rushing Plant City, Fla., Sam Rushing, Atlanta, Texas and Melvin Rushing, Hammond, La.

Anna E. Sampiere, 94
ANDOVER | Anna E. (Balusek) Sampiere, 94, of Andover, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at her home.
She was born in Durby, Conn. on Oct. 11, 1913.
She was a member of St. Augustine Church.
The widow of Frank N. Sampiere, she is survived by one daughter, Geraldine Rourke of Andover; one grandson, David Rourke and his wife Alysia of Medford; one brother, Emil Balusek of Trembel, Conn.; great-grandson, AJ Michael Rourke; several nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Jeffrey Rourke and mother-in-law of the late Arthur Rourke.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends were invited to a funeral Mass on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex St., Andover. Calling hours were Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main St., Andover. Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery. Alfred S. Silverman
HAVERHILL | Alfred S. "Saul" Silverman died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
Saul was born Aug. 17, 1923 in Haverhill, to Fannie and Jacob Silverman. He was married to his high school sweetheart the late Louise B. Siskind for 56 years. He graduated Haverhill High School in 1941, Harvard College in 1944, Harvard Law School in 1947 and Florida State University in 1962.
He worked as an attorney in Boston, Lawrence and Haverhill from 1947 to 1957. Upon graduation in an interdisciplinary program in Marriage and Family Relation he was asked to chair Governor's LeRoy Collins Commission on Race Relations in 1960 for the state of Florida.
He returned to Haverhill where he opened a practice in Marriage and Family Counseling in 1961, founding Silverman & Associates Inc. He served as the Clinical Director of Silverman & Associates for 45 years where he worked with numerous individuals and families as well as training dozens of therapists in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
He served as consultant to the University of Rhode Island's Cooperative Extension Program for Family Life Education where he innovated specialized training for paraprofessionals in the counseling and mental health professions.
He was passionate not only about the development of mental health but also in such political and intellectual pursuits as Political Theology, World Government, International Conflict Resolution and Religion. He loved listening to others and working with them to find humane, authentic and therapeutic solutions.
He is survived by his adoring sister, Helen Wineapple and her family; and his four children Andrea Ames of Haverhill, Dr. Rickey B. Silverman of Plaistow, N.H., Dr. Marc A. Silverman and his wife Yilda of Miami Beach, and Kurt S. Silverman and his wife Virginia of Andover. He leaves nine devoted grandchildren, Micah Ames of Kingston N.H., Jake Silverman of Revere, Samuel, Miles, Lucy and Peter Silverman of Andover, and Jason, Lennie and Rachel Silverman of Plaistow, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Micah Sean and Bailey Louise of Blaine, Minn.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at the H.L. Farmer Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13. Burial will be at Children of Israel Cemetery, Middle Road in Haverhill. A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m. at Oriental Gardens Restaurant, 400 Lowell Ave., Haverhill. ANDOVER - Caroline R. (Palese) Slombo, 83, of Andover, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at her home in Andover, following a long illness.
Caroline was born, raised and educated in Methuen.
She worked for the Andover School System and then for American Power Devices in Andover, until her retirement.
She is predeceased by her husband, Leo J. Slombo. She leaves her two sons, Robert and his wife Eleanor of Lee, N.H. and William and his wife Nancy of Newton, N.H.; two sisters, Marion Sambataro of Salem, N.H. and Christina; two grandsons, William and Cody Slombo, both of Newton, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

Beatrice "Bea" Eleanor (Williams) Morreo, 85, died peacefully Thursday, February 2nd, 2012, surrounded by family at her home in Brooksby Village.

She was the wife of the late Daniel Anthony Morreo and she lived in Andover with him for 40 years. Survived by 5 children, Susan Birrell, Gail Bryant, Mark Morreo, Martha Wiley, and Dan Morreo; 10 grandchildren including Christy, Brittany, Joshua, Randall, Molly, Robbie, Heather, Nicole, Ali and Abbey; and one great granddaughter, Ella Grace. She will be missed. -

Linda R. Pytka, age 63, of Andover, passed away on January 30, 2012, after a brave battle against multiple myeloma that lasted over six years.

Born and raised in Worcester, she was the loving mother of three sons, Jonathan, Brendan, and Justin, and the devoted wife of Stephen M. Pytka. Her passing was peaceful, and she was surrounded by her family, who will miss her dearly. Linda was formerly a critical care nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, helping others through their difficult times. -

She was born on July 12, 1929 in New York City, the daughter of Michael Henry and Margaret Ruth (Griffin) Farrell. She majored in history at Barnard College, at which time she met her future husband of 60 years, Theodore Kruse. She maintained a life-long interest in history, art and current events, and served on the boards of numerous civic and volunteer organizations. As a member of the League of Women Voters, she studied how the dearth of low-income housing shaped communities and this interested her in zoning issues. This work lead to her being appointed to Piscataway’s Civil Rights Advisory Commission and also the Zoning Board of Adjustments. She was later elected to Piscataway’s Town Council. After moving to the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, she wrote articles for the Edgewood News and served on the Resident Council. -
