Cary, NC — Rudolf Peter Hecken, 82, of Cary, NC, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2013. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
A native of Bad Hönningen, Germany, he was the loving husband of Gisela Hecken and the son of the late Anton and Maria Hecken, both deceased.
He is survived by two daughters and his sons-in-law, Margit and Ed Iwanowicz of San Diego, CA and Gabriele and John Bauman of Cary, NC; a son, Michael Hecken of Pittsboro, NC; and his grandchildren, Peter, Andrew and Kaitlyn Iwanowicz, and Jessica and Cayla Bauman. He is also survived by his brother and his wife, Karl and Ursula Hecken, and a sister and her husband, Margit and Horst Schleicher, all residing in Germany. His brother, Alfons Hecken, predeceased him. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews with their families.
Rudolf earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Aachen (RWTH), Germany and obtained his first job at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. He subsequently immigrated with his family to Massachusetts in 1968 where he worked for the then Bell Laboratories as an engineer. He lived in Andover and N. Andover until his retirement from Lucent Technologies in 1992. He continued to work as a consultant in his field of telecommunications. He later moved to Hilton Head Island, SC to enjoy his full retirement. Rudolf enjoyed the great outdoors, especially the mountains, traveling, fishing, rose gardening and painting.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private memorial service was conducted at St. Michael the Archangel in Cary, NC.
