Barbara (Gerry) Neal, 70


Andover and Methuen — Barbara (Gerry) Neal, 70, a 38-year resident of Andover residing at Twin Brook Circle before moving to Stone Castle Estates in Methuen in March of this year, died unexpectedly on November 16, 2012 at the Lawrence General Hospital.

She was born in Newburyport on March 28, 1942 to the late John and Pauline (Towne) Gerry. Raised and educated in Newburyport, she was a graduate of Newburyport High School before receiving her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst then her Master’s degree from Northeastern University.

She was a school teacher at the Andover West Middle School teaching mathematics to grade 8 students until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, she volunteered her time as Treasurer for the Andover Fund for Education. She was a member of South Church in Andover for many years. A survivor of breast cancer, she enjoyed life to the fullest — spending her time knitting, traveling and going on cruises with family and friends especially to Cancun, Mexico. She also enjoyed all of her many new friends at Stone Castle Estates and spending time with her loving grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her husband Richard Neal of Methuen (former Superintendent of Schools in Andover); son, Stephen Neal and his wife Trina of Bradford; daughters, Jennifer Oswitt and her husband Gregory of Northbridge, and Jessica Janeczak and her husband Thomas of Tyngsborough; grandchildren, Tyler and Samantha Neal and Caroline, Christopher, and Mathew Oswitt; sister, Nancy Canali of Amesbury; brother, J. Joseph Gerry of Newbury. She is also survived by her step-sister, Janet McDonnell and her husband Robert of Newburyport, and step-brother, John Bishop and his wife Ann of Damariscotta Maine. She is predeceased by her father, John, her mother, Pauline, and her step-father, John Bishop.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St. Andover. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by burial in Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
