Letter: 'Overwhelmed' by support for Afghan exchange student beginning college

'Overwhelmed' by support for Afghan exchange student beginning college

Editor, Townsman:

Dear Andover Community: I am overwhelmed by your response to my plea for help keep Massoud Kohistani from Afghanistan in the United States and enrolled at Bunker Hill Community College. After living in Andover for 27 years and raising five children here I was aware of the uniqueness of this community, but never did I expect such an immediate and generous response.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, Massoud will start college orientation in America, a passion he carried unfaltering in his soul throughout all the hardships he faced in Afghanistan. It's a passion ignited by the teachers at Andover High and the special community that embraced him over five years ago when his English vocabulary was painfully limited. We have far to go, but because of your generosity the journey has begun and my family and I want to thank you with all our hearts.
