O'Donoghue independent, fact-driven choice

Editor, Townsman:

We are writing today to express our enthusiastic support for Mary O’Donoghue in her campaign for a seat on the Andover Board of Selectmen. We have known Mary for several years, having watched her work on the Finance Committee, most recently as vice-chairwoman.

Mary is dedicated to the tasks she undertakes. It has been obvious to us that Mary is prepared, independent and fact-driven. She has taken unpopular public positions in the past, and, even under extreme political pressure on some occasions, has taken the independent, reasoned view that came as a result of her understanding of the issue.

On a personal note, I can attest, as a member of the Bancroft School Building Committee, that Mary was the only board liaison who attended virtually all of our early meetings when the SBC was making critical project decisions. The role of the liaison for each board is to stay up-to-date on the activities of the group for which they are liaison. Mary was able to keep the Finance Committee aware of decisions by the SBC as they were being made. The board on which she now seeks to serve, unfortunately, had no such resource.

Some have asked why Mary is seeking this office now. The Finance Committee is an advisory board to the town, while the Board of Selectmen is a policy-making board. Mary believes that she is qualified at this point to assist in making policy, and to attempt, in her singular way, to take a more direct role in guiding the town on a better, more financially sustainable path to the future.

I hope you will join us in supporting Mary O’Donoghue for Selectmen. Please vote on March 25 at the high school.
