SOS: Save Our Summers

Editor, Townsman:

Growing up in Andover when I did, I was lucky enough to take the Andover Youth Service summer program for granted. Now that I am old enough to look back on the memories and experiences taken away from those amazing summers, I cannot sit back and watch the people running this town make that same mistake of taking the program for granted.

How can Andover's leaders remove funding from something so positive? Kids these days are given so few opportunities to form bonds and friendships with their peers outside of school. Between the rising prices for after-school activities and summer camps, the Andover Youth Service summer program provides a breath of fresh air. Simply meet with the employees and you'll realize how much they love what they do and care about this town's youth. These employees are some of the most selfless people this town could ask for, and Andover's parents are lucky to have them.

Do not take Youth Services for granted; force this town's leaders to realize that it is not OK to slash a program's budget by 96 percent. Annually, over 1,500 kids use the summer program as a form of camp. As a result of the slash in funding, local employment within the program will drop significantly and cutbacks will be made on trips. Most importantly, the summer program provides those who use it memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
