Great confidence in former prosecutor Tabit
Editor, Townsman:
As a politically active and 60-year resident of Andover, I strongly endorse the candidacy of Sal Tabit, running for state representative of the 17th Essex District. I have known Tabit as both a colleague and friend for over 15 years, first as an assistant district attorney assigned to the Lawrence Office, where as member of the Lawrence Police Department, I and fellow officers had the good fortune to have him prosecute our cases. I always found Tabit to be a very prepared, professional and tenacious prosecutor who knew the facts of the case cold. Anytime that Tabit was prosecuting my case, I felt great confidence in the outcome.
I have that same feeling in how he will perform in the Statehouse. Supporting and endorsing a candidate for office is a serious personal decision and not one I take lightly. However, when considering our current climate of crisis, where we are all facing the serious challenges of unending increased taxes, business failures and subsequent high unemployment, foreclosures, reductions of public safety personnel and school lay-offs, one has to wonder when is enough, enough? I firmly believe it is time to bring some common sense and sensibility back to the Statehouse. These are times that cry out for reducing tax burdens, not increasing them by 25 percent as some of our misguided local legislators supported last year. The ever-tightening stranglehold government has placed on small businesses and regular citizens needs be loosened. Those in power must understand small businesses are the driving force of our economy. You don't tax your way out of a recession. Tabit will oppose and vote against any new tax initiatives.
Tabit is a small businessman himself, who faces the same issues that all do: managing a business, meeting a payroll, paying taxes and trying to survive economically. Sal, his wife Jean, a physician at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, and their two young daughters have lived in Andover for many years and are fully invested and very active in community programs and issues. I sincerely believe Tabit is the best choice to become our next state representative.
