Letter: Oberto would not be beholden to special interests

Oberto would not be beholden to special interests

Editor, Townsman:

Jodi Oberto is an Independent candidate running for the State Senate in the Second Middlesex and Essex district which includes Dracut, Tewksbury, Lawrence and Andover. The time has come for the voters to elect a person with fresh, new and quite frankly, good ideas - that's Oberto.

Oberto believes what many of us believe, that the state senator representing our district should listen only to the voters of the district. That is a big reason why she is running as an Independent. Oberto believes that those elected to serve the people should bring the citizens ideas before the government for debate. I believe this is how government used to work and how it should again if we want to make real progress and solve our difficult problems.

As have many of us, Oberto has watched the recent political maneuvering and shenanigans on Beacon Hill. Through her candidacy, she has decided to step up and be part of the solution to the gridlock, waste, and selfish mismanagement that many of us have sadly come to believe is all we can expect from our state government. Who would have thought we would be using the term gridlock in reference to a state government that has all three legislative and executive bodies controlled by the same party?

Oberto has said no to all political action committee money and will accept no PAC endorsements. She wants to serve as your state senator without obligation to any outside interests. This is refreshing to me. This reminds me of a simpler time in America, where people served without being part of a huge machine. Oberto is putting her candidacy out there for your consideration because she believes honest, hard-working people can make a difference on Beacon Hill. Oberto will work with her fellow Senators to get the job done if you elect her, but in the end, she will only be responsible to us, the citizens of the district. She will not be beholden to special interests, nor to entrenched Beacon Hill leadership who are too selfish and ego-driven to make decisions for the public good. DAVID N. ANDREWS
