Letter: Read, think, ask, vote in 2010
Read, think, ask, vote
Editor, Townsman:
November 9, 2010. Take a look at that date. It's a very important one for everyone to remember and get prepared.
Confused? It's more than a year from today. Why should I be concerned? Let me help you find an answer.
It will be easier for you if you read, even casually, a daily newspaper, something other than the sports page. I have nothing against the sports, I read it top to bottom. It really does nothing to acquaint you with the real "changes" that are going on in your country. If you read and are satisfied with the changes that have occurred and those on the horizon, stop reading here. That not being the case, read on.
If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can count on Paul to support you, but what does Peter think? Maybe you're not worried about what Peter thinks. I would hope you were, after all, you are Peter.
You had better start thinking about the "Age of Entitlement" that we have voted for or at least allowed. Have you ever thought about the time rapidly approaching when there will be 49 percent of the folks out there paying the way for 51 percent. How long do you think that can be sustained? There is a Scottish history professor who says democracy (I think he means a republic, a democratic republic, not the small "D") as a system of government can not be sustained forever. He states that the average age of a democratic (small "D" again) government is about 200 years. 2009 minus 1776 = 233. Remember that. The Scottish professor, goes on to say, and I paraphrase, that the democratic system will fail when it becomes known that the people can raid the public treasury at their discretion. We have done that, are doing that and there are bills now in the Congress that make the borrowing we have done look like your child borrowing against next week's allowance, a.k.a. "punk change." Our debt now is $4,700 for every man, women and child in the USA, larger than India's total economy - $1.42 trillion.
This may have given you something to think about and read about between now and Nov. 10, 2010. That's the date you have your next opportunity to make another "change," maybe this time one you want to live with. Mark the date in your calendar, read, think, ask, vote.

Editorial: Weighty issues of fall upon us
There's no question the area needed the water. But the cool, wet, overcast weather this week brought with it the relative gloom and reality that summer is coming to a close. You know, real summer - where kids are off from school, vacations are more plentiful, the sun is out past 7:30 p.m., and the town beach is open. With the start of school next Wednesday, Sept. 1, many will devote more attention again to the issues of the day - issues that don't involve sunscreen. Among those deserving of immediate attention are the upcoming state primary, and the plan to replace Bancroft Elementary with an approximately $35 million new school.

Editor, Townsman:
In reference to your story about California Products, it's ironic that while Andover is home to the world's leading manufacturer of tennis court surfacing materials, our high school's courts are among the most poorly constructed and maintained in the region. -

Editor, Townsman:
on behalf of the board of directors of the Andover Historical Society, I would like to acknowledge the youth volunteers from the Summer Volunteer Program of the South Church. For three mornings this summer, they, accompanied by counselors and chaperones, worked painting the fence in the front of the Amos Blanchard House.
