Letter: Finegold supports business

The Andover Townsman

---- — Editor, Townsman:

As a resident of Andover, the chairman of Philips Electronics North America and chairman of the town’s Green Advisory Board, I have seen firsthand State Sen. Barry Finegold’s commitment to business in the Merrimack Valley.

He understands that it takes collaboration to cultivate a business climate, while respecting the broad range of needs of Andover residents on important issues like education and quality of life. I personally witnessed Finegold’s involvement with the business community regarding the planning for a new salt shed to be located near the River Road exit off of Interstate 93. As the salt shed will practically be on the doorstep of many local businesses in the River Road business district, we were concerned that this utility building (essential though it may be) could have a negative impact on our business and the quality of life for our employees, (i.e., salt runoff and traffic tie-ups). Finegold and his staff attended meeting after meeting with MassDOT and other concerned business owners until a compromise was reached. All of us were impressed by the Senator’s commitment to work with MassDOT to achieve an acceptable design solution.

Through our hiring process, I’ve seen how crucial it is to promote and support STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) initiatives. Finegold has been relentless is his insistence that public schools emphasize math and science classes to prepare students for the jobs of the future. He’s also been a big supporter of the Workforce Training Fund that provides necessary training for growing and emerging trades.

Finegold has counseled the town’s Green Advisory Board about engaging with local businesses to advocate on behalf of Smart Growth proposals, promoting energy-efficient buildings, transportation-oriented growth, proximity to the Central Business District and a vibrant commercial center.

Senator Barry Finegold has been an exemplary state senator. Our community is fortunate to be working with someone as dedicated and responsive to the needs of both local businesses and citizens.
