Jen Meagher was my junior year creative writing teacher at Andover High School. She was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She truly cared about her work and it was evident in her teaching. I talked to her many times while at AHS about the lack of a contract. She truly believed that the changes that were being suggested would adversely impact the students at AHS. She was passionate in her convictions. She sent out an email suggesting that teachers abstain from voting. She felt that the process of accreditation was missing a key piece of information in that we were going to drastically change the teaching process going to a six-class system. If every teacher in the school had listened to her email and not voted, the school would have lost its accreditation and perhaps I wouldn’t be in college right now. However, that didn’t happen.
Did she go a little overboard? Perhaps, but she doesn’t deserve to have her career destroyed as a result, especially considering the fact that she did it for all the right reasons. We won’t know if a six-course load system is a success or failure for years. The proof is in the future test scores. Right or wrong, she doesn’t deserve this punishment. She is an asset to Andover High School and deserves to stay.
