Retirees' healthcare far from free

Editor, Townsman:

I’m not sure what the town manager was talking about when he says that Andover offers retirees “free healthcare for life.” About four years ago, Town Meeting voted to transfer all retirees from the town group healthcare insurance plan to Medicare. And that isn’t free. Every three months, I receive a bill from the Medicare Premium Collection Center in St. Louis, Mo.

What the town does offer its former employees is supplemental healthcare insurance, which covers services not covered by Medicare. It is an opportunity to stay in a group plan, which is cheaper than an individual plan. But that isn’t free either. That amount comes directly off my monthly pension check.

So before the town manager tries to sell another program, he should check what is really happening now.
