This letter is in response to the recent suspension of 23 members of the senior class of Andover High, following their overzealous “last lap” and parking lot antics on the last day of school. While the incident was unfortunate all around, I find it more unfortunate that the principal is being criticized by the parent community.
Chris Lord is an outstanding principal — managing what amounts to a small town with nearly 2,000 people within the walls of that school. He extended himself to meet with parents in the months leading up to the start of the year, affording ample opportunities for parents to gain clarity with regard to the expectations he would soon set. And he has continued to extend himself with outreach and ongoing communication to both parents and students throughout the year.
Dr. Lord is committed to the pursuit of academic excellence and educating the whole child — which means, holding students accountable for the behavioral norms that were established at the beginning of the year. So as parents, we can be surprised by and even criticize Dr. Lord’s decision to suspend these students or we can get informed regarding what is expected of our children as the privileged recipients of an education at Andover High School.
