Letter: Town must end silence on water treatment plant investigation

End silence on water treatment plant investigation

Editor, Townsman:

It has been about seven weeks since the initial press release, and the people of Andover still have not been told, even in the most general terms, the nature of alleged improprieties by an employee or employees of the Andover water treatment plant.

Criminal investigations notwithstanding, there are things the town manager and selectmen could have said, but conspicuously did not. It seems to me they would have hastened to reassure the public that the "improprieties" did not compromise or taint the water supply, if that were true. If the water supply was tainted, why shouldn't they have alerted the public so that we could have made timely, informed choices (stock up on bottled water, talk to our doctor, and so on)?

Something else our town leaders could have told is the plan or timetable for disclosure. What we've received instead is the silent treatment, which provokes fear and mistrust. They owe us better than that.
