Superintendent Claudia Bach stepping down

Claudia Bach, superintendent of schools since 1998, will step down at the end of the school year.

"I am not retiring, I remain a very committed educator, and will be looking to serve in a meaningful way someplace else. When a good opportunity comes along, I will move on to a new challenge and adventure," said Bach while making her announcement at Tuesday night's School Committee meeting, Oct. 27.

"I have come to this decision after considerable thought, and frankly, with a heavy heart. It is not easy to contemplate leaving a job that I have come to love very much. For the last 11 plus years I have been honored to have led this district," Bach read from a prepared statement.

Diane Costagliola, longtime PTO leader, said she was surprised by Bach's announcement. "We haven't always agreed, but that's how you build great things and grow," she said, praising Bach for always holding her ground.

School Committee Chairwoman Debra Silberstein said the committee had accepted Bach's resignation. Notice will go out to all parents and staff in the district tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 28, Bach said.
