100 years Ago - Dec. 17, 1909

The plate glass in O.P. Chase's store was broken early Wednesday morning. The motorman on one of the early cars which brings the Lawrence papers to Andover, in attempting to throw off the bundle, aimed too high and sent it crashing through the window.

Louis G. Buck is badly poisoned about the face.

Sunday forenoon, while on her way to church, Mrs. Charles Shaw slipped on some ice and fell, severely spraining her ankle.

Mrs. Etta F.Higgins spent Saturday and Sunday in the Vale.

Mrs. William Majerison of Lawrence spent Wednesday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Haynes, High Street.

The 15th annual Goldsmith prize-speaking took place in Punchard Hall last Friday evening and a very successful program was carried out. The girl's prize was awarded to Miss Annie May Pratt '13, while the prize for the boys was awarded to John Everett Collins '13.

75 years Ago - Dec. 14, 1934

The Andover Red Cross closed its 18th annual roll-call Thanksgiving Day and it proved highly successful. Both membership and contributions promise to place the town high on the list of communities throughout the nation.

The regular meeting of the League of Women Voters will be held on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Horace Poynter , 6 Main Street at 3:15 p.m. Under the leadership of Mrs. R. N. C. Barnes Chairman, a small group of women have been holding discussion meetings to study problems of local taxation.

An attempt to secure used clothing in wearable condition for distribution among poorly clad schoolchildren was started this week by the student aid committee of the PTA.

Prompt action has been taken by the local authorities on the request of the Andover Parent Teachers' Association to have a school boy traffic patrol organized at the Central Schools. Under the new plans, Punchard Avenue has been made the main thoroughfare for the western part of the Town and when children are leaving school, a man will be on duty at the Main Street and Punchard Avenue intersection.

50 Years Ago - Dec. 17, 1959

The School Committee has established a new salary schedule for teachers ranging from a minimum of $4,200 to $6,000. Nine $200 increments will be automatically given between the minimum and maximum rates.

The 1960 tax base may increase as little as 25 cents if tentative budget estimates prepared by Town Manager Thomas E. Duff are approved. The 1959 rate is $26.00 per thousand.

Editorial: The construction of Route 110 through Andover starting next Spring will certainly further complicate the town's gravel-pit problems. For there will be a constant need for gravel throughout that construction period - and what's more natural for local land owners to want to sell to the contractors?

Construction bids are being sought for the superstructure of the multi-million dollar bridge on Interstate 495 (Route 110) between North Andover and Lawrence, it was reported this weekend to Gov. Foster Furcolo by State Public Works Commissioner Anthony N. DiNatale.

The entire Shawsheen School will attend the annual Christmas program tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. when the kindergarten with grades one through four will present the program under the direction of Miss Ann Harnedy, principal, Mrs. Joanne Holland, Mrs. Kay Danahy, Miss Martha Howe, Miss Mary Leary, Mrs. Gladys Hajjar, Mrs. Carlene Darby, and Mrs. Marjorie Ganley.
