People ducked in and out of stores downtown and enjoyed entertainment on the streets last Friday night, during a well attended Holiday Happenings that benefitted from a clear, crisp late fall evening. A crowd gathered for a tree lighting at 61 Main St. at 6:30 p.m., in front of Banknorth, and people sipped hot chocolate while taking in the seasonal sight. Residents also emjoyed horse-drawn hayrides up and down Main Street, sampled roasted chestnuts in front of Old Town Hall and took in the singing and playing of several musical groups. Some people bought Christmas decorations, such as those sold by Andover Youth Services. The downtown was filled with young families in the early evening, and some of these returned Saturday morning for a breakfast with Santa at Old Town Hall and a storytelling session at Memorial Hall Library.
