Ditroia helps WPI softball to historic season

Courtesy photoAndover High senior defensive specialist Amy Stankiewicz, shown here at the school last week, has signed to play volleyball at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. Stankiewicz played back row for the Golden Warriors volleyball team that advanced to the Division 1 state title game last fall, winning the North title for the second straight season. Stankiewicz is also a captain of the Andover softball team and an MVC Division 1 All Star.

Andover’s Jacquelyne Ditroia capped off her junior year by helping WPI softball notch a stellar season, advancing to the NCAA Division 3 Super Regionals last week.

The Engineers (34-11) set the program record for wins in a single season en route to its first-ever NCAA Division 3 Championship tournament berth. The WPI team swept through the Williamstown Regional, sporting a 3-2 record on the national stage.

Ditroia started every game of the tournament at second base, and appeared in 37 of WPI’s 45 games. She finished the season with a .204 record, 19 hits and three doubles. It was her third season as a starter for the Engineers.
