Hyslip hits century mark

Published: January 31, 2008

BOYS HOCKEY

John Hyslip had big shoes to fill this season, and the stats indicate he has done just that.

The senior center scored a goal and an assist in Andover's 4-0 win over Wakefield on Wednesday. That gave him 100 points for his career. Former linemate Tucker Mullin reached that mark a season ago.

On the season, Hyslip has six goals and a team-best 17 assists. He had 14 goals and 26 assists in his breakout junior season a year ago.

Freshman Paul Russell added two goals and Cam Smith had a tally in the game.

...

George Flanagan scored a pair of goals, giving him a team-high 12 for the season as Andover bested Chelmsford, 4-2 on Saturday. John Hyslip had a goal and two assists while Cam Smith stayed hot with his 10th goal of the year. Paul Russell, Joe Kuta and Kevin Drew each had an assist.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Shannon heats up, leads Warriors

Tristian Shannon just seemed to feed off the physical play.

The 6-foot-3 senior scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, both team highs, as Andover crushed archrival Lawrence 74-56 on Friday night.

"Tristian's motor tonight was at another level compared to everybody else on the court," Andover coach Dave Fazio said. "Any time you go into Lawrence and win, it's a good win. It's always tough."

Shannon teamed with frontcourt mate Zach Burdeau to dominate under the boards. Burdeau scored 13 points of his own. Guard Derrick Beasley stayed hot with 13 points while Greg Cook had 11 and sixth man Chris Abreu had nine for the winners.

"It's physical; it's usually like that when we play Lawrence or Central (Catholic)," said Shannon, whose team is 8-5. "You can't really get sidetracked. You need to focus on what you need to do."

...

Greg Cook scored eight points to help Andover best Billerica 63-31 last Tuesday. Tristian Shannon scored a team-high 11 points while Sean Ehlbeck had seven for the winners.

GIRLS TRACK

Relay sets record, gives Andover MVC title

Andover coach Peter Comeau admitted he was shocked

"I am stunned they could run that at a (slow) track like that," Comeau said. "The kids were all smiles after."

His 4x400 relay team of Vanessa Singleton, Kayley Pettoruto, Melissa Knapp and Colleen Shannon gave reason for their teammates to smile, shattering the league record by seven seconds in leading the Golden Warriors to a 44-42 victory over Haverhill in the meet to decide the Merrimack Valley Conference Large title last Wednesday.

"I knew that if we could get it to the (4x400) relay we would have a very good chance of winning," said Comeau. "Those four girls are the best in the state. I felt comfortable."

They ran the race in 4:10.2, beating the Hillies by 4.6 seconds and flying past the previous league record of 4:17.

For the winners, Jess Forster won the high jump with a 5-2, Mallory Cayon took the 50 hurdles, Knapp took the 300 and Shannon won the 1,000. Christina Muccio's 6.1 in the 50 broke the previous league record, but Haverhill's Sam Stabile beat her in the race.

The Andover team of Colleen Shannon, Vanessa Singleton, Melissa Knapp and Kayley Pettoruto ran the 1,600 in 4:12.83, the seventh best time in the nation this year and good for victory at the McIntyre Relays on Sunday. They also teamed to take second in the 4x400 relay, recovering after a dropped baton.

The Golden Warriors also took second in the 4x50 yard hurdles with a team comprised of sisters Jess Forster and Rosie Foster, Mallory Caynon and Nicole Johnson in 31.39 seconds.

Davidovits leads Andover to fifth

Aaron Davidovits quickly deflected any personal accomplishments.

"It's pretty much everyone," said the senior. "The new guys are at the stage of where the older guys were a year ago. They're all getting better equally."

But it was Davidovits that scored two thirds and a fifth to lead Andover to a fifth-place finish at the seven-team Salem Invitational on Saturday.

Davidovits took third in the vault (8.1) and all-around (40.2) while placing fifth in the floor (7.1).

"Our big goal today was to get our team score up," said Davidovits. "And the scores did improve."

Chris Chu also made strides. He matched his season-high with a 6.0 on the floor
