Comeau takes Div. 1 state hurdles title

The Andover Townsman

---- — Girls track

Courtney Comeau may still be fighting off the pain of the back injury that cost her an entire season, but the Andover High senior was certainly in top form on Monday.

Comeau broke the tape in 8.74 to win the Division 1 state title in the 55-meter hurdles at the Division 1 State Track Meet.

“It was very exciting, almost unreal,” Comeau said. “It means so much more considering the season I have had and everything I have been through. To know that I can still win and be a state champion is great.”

The UMass recruit’s teammates Hannah Chapman (3rd, 8.92) and Lizzie Kobelski (8th, 9.19) also scored.

Comeau was coming off a second-place effort at the MVC Championships at Reggie Lewis where she was clocked in 8.76.

“I am still running in a flexible back brace that keeps my muscles warm,” Comeau said. “After the preliminaries, I was the only runner that broke 9 seconds, so that was a confidence boost. The finals were close, but I knew when I crossed the finish line that I had won. Now I can go into the rest of the winter and spring feeling strong and confident.”

Comeau’s close friend Catherine Haut added another big finish, placing second in the long jump with a 16-5.25.

For the boys, the 4x200 (1:32.71) and 4x400 (3:29.84) each took third.
