The Andover Townsman
---- — Once again this basketball season, Ronald R. Hill of Baystate Financial in Andover is sponsoring Player of the Fortnight Awards for the Andover High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams.
The awards recognizing contributions to team excellence will be given in consultations with the team coaches.
The first awards of this season go to senior girls captain Jessica Witten and boys varsity player Kenny Doherty.
Girls coach E.J. Perry says of Witten: “Jessica is a fine player and an excellent contributor to positive team chemistry. She’s a great shooter with a fine move to the basket. She provides great leadership. We all hope for a very fine rest of the season from Jessica.”
Boys coach Dave Fazio says of Doherty: “Kenny is a senior who contributes a lot to our program. He is a fine practice player, he’s very helpful with the young guys on the team and he brings great energy to our team every day. He’s been instrumental to the growth and success of our program, and we appreciate him a lot.”
The weekly award was started about 15 years ago by Baystate Financial. Recipients are generally players with great spirit who show up every day, practice hard and have been part of the junior varsity and varsity teams for several years.
Player of the Fortnight winners will now alternate between the boys and girls varsity teams for the remainder of the season. Next week’s recipient will be a member of the girls team.
