Girls Softball 8U division moving to spring

Andover Girls Softball’s 8 and under division is undergoing a transformation. The former Primary League division that has played its games in the summer will now take the field in the spring, with action beginning next month.

League leaders say their goal to split the 8U division into teams of 5- and 6-year-olds and teams of 7- and 8-year-olds so that all girls will play with and against others closest to their age and ability level.

This will be a developmental league focusing on teaching hitting, fielding and throwing as well as learning the strategy of softball. While it will be a coach pitch league, the girls will begin to focus on the fundamentals of pitching and have the opportunity to attend weekly “pitching and pizza” clinics.

Each team will play one game a week on Sunday afternoons and also have one practice a week. The weekly practices will be in the form of a clinic led by Ann Gubellini of the Show Softball Academy.

Weather permitting, practice will begin in mid-April.
