Team sport: Adult spelling bee April 9

Adults have the chance to compete in a different kind of team sport, the 13th Annual Andover Spelling Bee.

The Andover Fund for Education will host its bee on Friday, April 9 at West Middle School starting at 7 p.m. For additional information and to download a Spelling Bee registration form, go to www.AndoverFundforEducation.org.

"A fun-filled community event, the bee offers participants a chance to support educational innovation in the Andover Public Schools while also promoting a local school, business, or organization. AFE offers several ways to participate: enter a team of four adults in the competition; sponsor a round of the bee; or place an ad in the program," report organizers in a release. "Though some very good spelling does take place, the Andover Spelling Bee emphasizes entertainment, and the atmosphere is casual and family-friendly. To keep the focus on fun, the Bee is designed not as an individual competition but rather as a team sport - team spellers "sink or swim" together."

Many the teams arrive in costume, as do many of the audience members - especially young students - who show up to cheer on their favorite team. A Spirit Trophy is awarded to the school team supported by the most enthusiastic fans, who are invited to strut their stuff in the Spirit Parade that takes place just before the final round. A Most Creative Team Costume award is given out as well.

At the end of the evening, prizes are awarded to the winning team of spellers.

All proceeds from the Spelling Bee support grants to Andover teachers who are implementing new and creative classroom projects. Over the past two years, AFE has funded 23 grants totaling more than $12,000 to teachers pursuing innovation in the Andover Public Schools.
