Boys basketball takes Christmas Tourney thriller

Andover erased a 5-point deficit in the final 1:31 of regulation and owned the overtime to earn a thrilling 76-63 win over North Andover in the opening game of the 38th annual Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney last Thursday.

Sam Dowden (26 points, 8 rebounds) was immense fighting the Knights’ tall and talented big men 6-6 Isaiah Nelsen (27 points) and 6-5 Chris Bardwell. Senior guard Max Silveira added 17 points and sophomore sub David Giribaldi was Mr. Clutch with 17 points.

But this game was won on the defensive end with Andover forcing the Knights into a whopping 25 turnovers for the game and set the tone with 11 in the first quarter.

“We always try to keep the opposing team uncomfortable,” said Dowden, a 6-4 senior co-captain who can hit the outside shot, take it to the basket and finish around the rim with either hand.

Coach Dave Fazio raved about Tyler Verrette’s eight rebounds and defensive brilliance off the bench.

“Ty was just lock down,” said Dowden.

Chris Dunn knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to 2 points to lead Andover to a 77-40 drubbing of Dracut 77-40 last Tuesday. Sam Dowden continued to star with 13 points and Max Silveira had 11 for the winners.

Alois leads rout

Veronica Alois continued her dynamic freshman season, scoring four goals as Andover pounded first-year varsity program Central Catholic 10-0 last Monday. Meg Leary, Melissa Newton, Caroline Hughes, Brianna Deloury, Meg Keefe and Jessica Leone each added a single goal for the winners.

Vince Camin won the 200 IM (2:10.03) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.38), Joe Carroll took the 500 freestyle, Aaron Wu won the 50 freestyle and they teamed with Eric Shi to take the 200 medley relay as Andover beat Belmont 103-74 last Wednesday.

Caveneys do the job

Returning star Devon Caveney scored a team-high 14 points, and her cousin Colleen Caveney added eight points including a pair of 3-pointers as Andover topped Dracut 64-38 last Tuesday. Jackie Alois added 12 points and Jessica Witten had 11 points for the winners.

Puccia paces winners

Lily Puccia won the 600 (1:39.1), Abbie Pustis took the 300 (40.5) and they teamed with Molly Lennon and Emily O’Hara to take the 4x400 relay as Andover rolled over Lowell 59-27 last Tuesday. Emily Van Antwerp took the mile, Cassie Kobelski took the shot put and Courtney Comeau won the 50 hurdles for the winners.

Farnham shines

Cam Farnham scored a victory in the 50 dash in 5.6 for Andover, which fell to Lowell 68.7-17.3 last Tuesday.
