AHS grad Thomann leading Bentley team
Andover High School graduate Meghan Thomann was leading her college team with 10 three-pointers as of the end of November. She is a senior guard at Bentley.
Off to a 67-0 start with an average winning margin of more than 25 points, the Bentley University women's basketball team had moved to No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN/ Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II coaches' poll. It's the first time in the program's distinguished history that the Falcons have topped the rankings.

Westfield State University's Nicole Gagnon of Andover was selected to play in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association 2011 Senior All-Star Game.
"This is a great honor for Nicole," said Westfield State head coach Heather Cabral. "She has been an outstanding player for us the past four years and I am confident she will hold her own against the best seniors in the country. We are excited the game in close by this year so a lot of her families and friends will have an opportunity to see her play."
Gagnon was a three-time all-conference selection in the 12-team Little East Conference, a first-team pick in 2009 and a second-team honoree in 2011 and 2009. Specializing in penalty strokes, the stalwart defender finished her collegiate career with 10 goals, according to the school.
Cairns on NESCAC all-academic team
Leah Cairns of Andover, a member of the field hockey team at Hamilton College, was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference 2011 fall all-academic team.
Each honoree is a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.
The student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing at his or her institution to be considered for honors. Transfer students must have completed one year of study at the institution.
Cairns is a graduate of Andover High School.
Umpires announce January class dates
The Merrimack Valley Umpires Association has announced the umpire training clinic for men, women, and teenagers (over 16) will begin on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 and continue on consecutive Thursdays for the following six weeks. The clinics will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill campus, Room C-119, the Spurk Building.
The cost for the six-week program is $125, and covers the cost of study materials and exam fee. At the conclusion of the class, the Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Exam will be administered. Candidates who pass the exam and complete the required mechanics clinics will be certified as MVUA umpires.
The MVUA has been training quality umpires for over 50 years and MVUA umpires "are highly regarded and sought by all levels of baseball in Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire, and can be found doing high school, AAU, Babe Ruth and Little League games throughout the region," according to a release from the group.
The MVUA supports candidates of all genders, ethnic groups and ages (men and women over age 16) to become umpires.

AHS Alumni Hockey game
The annual Andover High School Alumni Hockey Game will be held Saturday, Jan. 21 before the 7 p.m. varsity game against Central Catholic at the Breakaway Ice Center in Tewksbury.
There are two games planned if the turnout permits: 5:10 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. are the ice times.
A minimum donation of $60 for the event is required. All proceeds go directly to the AHS Boys Hockey Program.
