Alois, Masterson clutch in dramatic win

The Andover Townsman

Veronica Alois put an exclamation point on her amazing sophomore season, scoring the game-winning goal in sudden-death penalty kicks that gave Andover a marathon 2-1 win over Chelmsford in the Division 1 North first round last Friday, Nov. 1.

The two teams had previously played two 10-minute overtimes and five shoot-out penalty kicks before going to sudden death. Goalie Emily Masterson made Alois’ heroics possible, and she knocked Chelmsford’s sudden death PK wide for a save.

Emily Van Antwerp scored Andover’s regulation goal, while Sarah Van Antwerp, Meredith Van Antwerp, Courtney Grygiel and Sophie Draper each scored early PK goals.

Emily Masterson made five saves, but Andover could not take advantage and lost to Newton North 3-0 in the Division 1 North quarterfinals on Saturday.

Kim takes four golds

Soojin Kim won the 200 freestyle (1:58.44) and 100 freestyle (54.77) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay as Andover took second as a team in the MVC Division 1 swim meet with 398 points. Rival Chelmsford took first with 504.

Maeve Awiszus added a victory in the 100 backstroke (1:01.82), Shannon Fitzsimmons took the 100 breaststroke (1:12.48) and they both joined Kim on the two relays. Rachel Landry was the other member of the 400 freestyle and Emilee Nason was the fourth member of the 200 medley relay. Alison Murtagh added a second in the 500 freestyle.

Leone the hero

Jacquelyn Leone scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Andover to a 2-0 victory over Concord-Carlisle in the Division 1 North first round last Thursday, Oct. 31. Briana Smith added the other goal, Weezie Gross had an assist and Nicole Schena made four saves for the shutout.

Powerhouse Andover ran into an equally potent foe, falling to Westford Academy 3-0 in the Division 1 North quarterfinals last Saturday. Both teams entered the game with just a single loss on the season.

Weber’s effort for naught

Despite eight saves for Mike Weber, Andover lost to St. John’s Prep 2-0 in the Division 1 North first round last Saturday.
