Andover native Offensive Player of the Week
Andover native Tom Dempsey was named Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week following Ithaca College’s 25-22 win over St. John Fisher last week.
Dempsey had career-best totals in yards (220), completions (20) and completion percentage (.741) in Ithaca’s win over St. John Fisher.
He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the second half that gave Ithaca the lead for good. Dempsey connected with nine different receivers in the game, and completed 14 of 16 passes in the first half.
It is the first Empire 8 weekly award for Dempsey, who has started three consecutive games, all victories for the Bombers.
Local named to Michigan school’s Hall of Fame
University Liggett School in Michigan recently inducted Andover resident Laura Khelokian Byron, class of 1987, to its Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame.
Byron played varsity field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse and soccer at Liggett, a private pre-kindergarten through grade 12 school. She was captain of the field hockey team her junior and senior years, and was named top scorer and MVP her sophomore year.
In volleyball, Byron received honorable mention by the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference her senior year. She was the leading scorer on the soccer team her freshman and sophomore years, and team captain her senior year. She was also a member of the Liggett Athletic Council for three years.
Byron went on to play varsity field hockey all four years at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.. She was team captain her junior and senior years, and held records for most goals in a season and most goals in a career.
