Merinder, Caveney lead hoops victories

Merinder leads the way

Center Connor Merinder showed the skills that made him crucial to last season’s tournament run by scoring 18 points as Andover fought off the Preps 2 squad 59-57 last Wednesday, June 25.


E.J. Perry IV netted a team-high 19 points, but Andover fell just short to the Preps 1 team — made up of players from Phillips Academy and other schools — 64-62 last Thursday, June 26.

Girls Hoops for Hope

Caveney red hot

Colleen Caveney continued to sizzle from the floor this summer, netting a game-high 14 points as Andover defeated Salem 46-37 last Tuesday, June 24.


Trio pitch a gem

Youngsters Cedric Gillette and Andrew Selima and veteran Jack Cox combined for a stellar night on in the hill as Andover crushed Peabody 11-3 last Wednesday, June 25.

Gillette, who is heading into his sophomore season at Andover High, worked 4.2 innings, allowed just two hits and struck out four to earn the win. Selima struck out three of the four batters he faced and Cox worked a perfect seventh to clinch the victory.

Selima also swung a hot bat, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Scott Leslie added two hits and three RBIs and Mike Calabro knocked in two runs on two hits for Post 8 (4-1).


Andover continued to receive excellent pitching performances, as Scott Leslie allowed just a single earned run over seven innings as Post 8 edged Lawrence 4-3 last Monday, June 23.

Tim Awiszus stayed hot with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Jack Cox knocked in the other run for the winners.


Andrew Selima doubled and tripled and scored twice, but Andover fell to Newburyport 7-4 last Thursday, June 26. Corey Stillings added two hits and three RBIs and Mike Calabro had two hits and drove in one run for Post 8.
