Burns scores Independent School League honors
Lawrence Academy junior Brian Burns received Honorable Mention from the Independent School League for his performance as second baseman on the Spartans’ baseball team this spring. Burns’ coaches also recognized his growth throughout the season with the team’s Most Improved Player Award.
Coach Chris Margraf said in a press release that, in a season that produced a 7–12 record, “strong pitching and solid defense allowed us to remain competitive in every game.” Burns’ performance at the plate (.324 avg., 12 hits, 7 runs scored, 6 walks) also contributed to the team’s successes, he said.
In March, during Lawrence Academy in Groton’s two-week experiential learning session known as Winterim, Burns immersed himself in a program that taught and let him practice skills needed to be a sports journalist. He observed events, conducted interviews and learned how to pitch and write a story. He is the son of Carla and Robert Burns of Andover.
