Three Andover pitchers helped power their team to a New England tournament championship.
Daniel Amidon, Alex Brickman and Gabe Hernandez of Andover and their travel baseball team, the New England Lightning, captured the 15U Plymouth Rock Baseball Classic Tournament Championship this month. Each of the boys are going into their sophomore year at Andover High and looking forward to playing for the school next season, according to a parent.
The tournament consisted of 14 teams from around New England competing during the weekend of Aug. 4-6. The Lightning, a member of the North East Baseball Alliance, took its tournament record of 5-0 into the championship game and defeated the Legends Baseball 3-2 in extra innings.
Each of the Andover players played a critical role, according to a release. Daniel Amidon pitched a complete-game, two-hit, 2-0 shutout to win game 3, whiffing 11 batters. Gabe Hernandez pitched a complete-game, 4-0 shutout to win game 4 and Alex Brickman got the win in game 5, a 9-1 mercy victory. Then in game 6, Brickman came in for relief to pitch three innings and Hernandez pitched the last three innings to close out the game, earning the save.
In addition to their pitching, the three Andover players scored all three runs during game 6. Amidon went 2-4, scoring on a passed ball to tie up the score 1-1 in the third inning. Then in the fifth inning, Hernandez scored a run to take the lead, 2-1. In the top of the seventh the Legends scored on a passed ball to tie the score 2-2 and the game went into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the bases were loaded with Brickman on third and Amidon at the plate. Amidon worked the count to 3-2 with two outs and hit a shot up the middle for the walk-off winning hit.
Throughout the summer season the Andover pitchers worked closely with their pitching coach. They played a total of 35 games throughout the season including the Perfect Game tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla., where they were also able to show their hitting and defensive skills, Amidon playing first base and outfield, Brickman playing third base and Hernandez playing shortstop and centerfield.
