Andover can claim a connection to another high profile tennis event.
A division of California Products Corp., headquartered in Andover, provided the surface for last week's Mercury Insurance Open.
The organizers of the Mercury Insurance Open selected DecoColor, from the makers of DecoTurf, as the official surface of their world-class tennis tournament. DecoTurf is a division of California Products Corp., which bills itself as the largest supplier of acrylic sport surfacing systems in the world. The company headquarters is located on Dascomb Road in Andover.
Players competed in the Mercury Insurance Open from Aug. 2 to Aug. 8 at the LaCosta Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. as part of the Olympus US Open Series. Many of the top WTA professionals, including second-ranked Jelena Jankovic and fifth-ranked Vera Zvonareva, competed in the tournament.
"DecoTurf is honored to have been chosen as the surface for this prestigious tournament," said John Graham, DecoTurf's managing director. "And we are always pleased to be working with the Saviano Company, who also helped build the DecoTurf courts for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games."
DecoTurf is also once again the surface for the Rogers Cup WTA tournament in Montreal this week, from Aug. 16 to 22, at Uniprix Stadium, in the heart of Quebec's biggest city.
DecoTurf, a multi-layer, cushioned tennis surface, has been the surface of the US Open for 33 years. It is also the "Official Surface of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry," according to the company.
