Phillips crew places second at Henley Women's Regatta
In an eye-opening performance, the Phillips Academy rowing team placed second at the 20th Henley Women's Regatta at Henley-on-Thames in England.
The Big Blue lost in the finals to a Canadian composite team in a tough race, after defeating the Commercial Rowing Club of Dublin, Ireland, Molesey Boat Club of England, and Phillips Exeter Academy.
The team's first race was against the Commercial Rowing Club. After stumbling at the start, the team found itself several boat lengths behind and rallied back to even by the race's midpoint. The two teams battled over the next 500 meters until Phillips found its rhythm and powered to victory.
In the team's second race on Saturday, it faced Molesey, considered to be a favorite among the locals. Phillips jumped out to an early open water lead in the first 200 meters and never looked back. This set up a rematch for the semifinals on Day 2 against archrival Phillips Exeter.
The Big Blue took the early lead and won easily. The victory over Exeter sent Andover into the finals to face a Canadian national team culled from two of Canada's strongest rowing clubs, South Niagara and E.L. Crossley.
Phillips had its best race of the season but the Canadians were up to the challenge.
The regatta drew over 300 crews from Australia, South Africa, England, Canada and the United States.
