Andover football optimistic after tough loss

By David Willis

ANDOVER — Andover coach Ken Maglio looked optimistic after the game.

"Our offense played well at times," said Maglio. "We moved the ball, but we couldn't put it into the end zone. And our special teams were good all night. The defense was good at times too, but it broke down at times. We are learning."

The young Golden Warriors fought growing pains in falling to Boston College High School, the No. 3 team in Eastern Mass., 38-14 on Friday night.

"We stuck it out and gave a very good effort," said senior linebacker Steven LaFortune. "But we played a very good team tonight."

LaFortune was a bright spot for the Golden Warriors (1-1), making a team-high 10 tackles, while safety Matt Washburn had nine stops. Safety Yogi Layne had seven tackles and recovered a fumble and brothers Andrew Lebowitz and Jake Lebowitz each made five tackles.

Craig Hornung recorded his first interception of the season and had an outstanding pass breakup early on and Matt Newton stood out against the pass. But the Golden Warriors were hurt by the run.

"We made some good stops, but they made some big plays," said Maglio. "We hit them and hit them and hit them and they just kept moving. That's what good teams do. We are a good team, too."

Ryan Peek scored Andover's first TD with a 92-yard kickoff return with 6:07 left in the second quarter to make the score 17-7.

The Golden Warriors' second score came with 11 seconds left in the game on a 12-yard hookup from John Hennessy to Sean Ehlbeck.

All-State 100 meter track champion Chris McConnell led Andover with six catches for 62 yards, both career highs. Peek had five catches for 20 yards.
