Murphy wows on the mound for Post 8

Ben Murphy delivered a pitching performance for the ages for Andover Legion, dazzling Danvers on July 10.

Called on to pitch in relief in the first inning, Murphy was unhittable over the next 9 2/3 innings. He retired 28 of the 30 batters he faced. He had one stretch of downing 17 hitters in a row, and after allowing a single retired the next 11 straight hitters.

He added 16 strikeouts and did not allow a run in the effort.

"In all my years of coaching I can't remember a game that has been pitching so well," said Andover coach Joe Iarrobino.

Murphy ended up with a no-decision however, as Post 8 lost the game in the 11th inning, after he had left the game.

Many offensive heroes helped Andover Post 8 starting pitcher Eoin McAvinchey cruise to an 11-0 victory over North Andover in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule last Tuesday.

McAvinchey tossed a two-hitter over 4 1/3 innings, striking out five before yielding to Andrew Johnian who got the last two outs of the game.

Andover's wooden bats were ablaze led by Bennett Deady (three hits and two RBIs), Burton Deady (two hits and two RBIs), Tom Palleschi (two-run single), Andrew Deloury and Dustin Hunt (two hits and an RBI apiece).

Despite seven innings of stellar work by ace Dustin Hunt, Andover could not force a runner home and Haverhill pulled out a 9-3 victory in eight innings on Monday.

Andover, which had two runners thrown out at the plate on failed bunt attempts, scored all of its runs in the fourth despite not having a base hit in the inning.

"The game should have been over in regulation," Andover coach Joe Iarrobino said. "And we should have got the win."

Ryan Halloran notched an RBI while Andrew Deloury and Burton Deady each had a hit and scored a run for Post 8.
