The Andover Townsman
---- — Twenty-three straight wins, a league title and now Andover volleyball can add a sectional championship to its list.
The Golden Warriors locked down the Division 1 North crown on Saturday, sweeping Haverhill 25-16, 25-17, 25-22.
“Our defense stepped it up again,” coach George Sullivan said. “That was the key. We have people that can really hit and do something with the ball when you get it to them. But you have to get it to them and that starts with defense.”
Hillies coach Bill Kaste saluted the Warriors and their effort, especially on defense where they simply wouldn’t allow the ball to hit the floor.
“They were very strong defensively and made it really hard on us,” Kaste said.
Rachel Schnakenberg continued to star for the Golden Warriors, notching 11 kills and eight blocks. Chelsea Hu chipped in with 14 kills and Azita Bakhtyari shined with 33 assists for the winners, who advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals to play Barnstable at Bridgewater-Raynham on Wednesday after The Townsman went to press.
